5 Simple Ways to Improve Your Child's Mental Maths
Mental maths โ doing calculations in your head without a calculator or pen โ is one of those skills that seems small but makes a big difference. Children who are strong at mental maths tend to be faster in exams, more confident during class, and better at estimating answers before they even start solving.
The good news is that mental maths improves quickly with the right kind of daily practice. Here are five things that actually work.
1. Use real-life situations
The easiest way to practice mental maths is to bring it into everyday life โ not as a lesson, but as a casual habit. A few simple examples:
- At a shop: "These two items together cost โน47 and โน35. How much is that in total?"
- At a restaurant: "If we got โน200 change from โน500, how much did we spend?"
- On a car journey: "We have driven 40 km and need to go 110 km total. How much is left?"
These small questions take under a minute and give mental maths a real purpose. Children respond much better to "how much change should we get?" than to "solve 500 minus 347."
2. Practice tables but make them active
Multiplication tables are the foundation of mental maths โ there is no way around this. But passive recitation ("2 times 1 is 2, 2 times 2 is 4โฆ") is the least effective way to learn them.
What works better:
- Ask random questions rather than going in order: "What is 7 times 8?" rather than going from 7ร1 upwards
- Time the answer โ even a loose estimate like "can you answer before I count to 5?" makes it active
- Spot-check one table each day rather than drilling all of them
Random-order table practice is harder but builds far more reliable recall than sequential recitation.

3. Teach simple shortcuts
Mental maths gets much easier once a child knows a few shortcuts. Here are three that are easy to learn and genuinely useful:
- Multiplying by 10: just add a zero. 36 ร 10 = 360. Obvious to adults, but many children do not realise this works as a general rule until it is pointed out.
- Rounding and adjusting: to calculate 49 ร 3, first calculate 50 ร 3 = 150, then subtract 3. Answer: 147. This works for any near-round number.
- Splitting numbers: to calculate 14 ร 6, split it as (10 ร 6) + (4 ร 6) = 60 + 24 = 84. Once a child gets comfortable splitting, multi-digit mental maths becomes much less scary.
4. Make it a 5-minute daily habit
Five minutes of mental maths every day is worth more than an hour once a week. The brain gets better at quick recall through frequent, short repetition โ not long, occasional sessions.
Pick a fixed slot: breakfast, the car to school, or just before bed. Ask five to ten quick questions. The whole thing should feel easy โ if it starts to feel like a chore, it is either too long or too hard.
๐ก Tip: Keep a tally of how many your child gets right each day. Not to pressure them, but because seeing that number go from 5/10 to 8/10 over a couple of weeks is genuinely motivating for most children.
5. Do not always correct immediately
When a child gets a mental maths question wrong, the instinct is to immediately give the right answer. But a slightly better approach is to ask: "Are you sure? Try it a different way." Give them 20 more seconds to self-correct.
Children who learn to catch their own mistakes become much more reliable under exam conditions. The habit of checking your own reasoning is more valuable than any individual correct answer.
